Reading the numbers

What these figures do and do not measure

The federal government does not publish a single national figure for vintage or antique home-decor sales. For that reason, this page does not present broad furniture-retail numbers as a count of vintage sales. Instead, it separates the larger retail picture from the environmental data that shows what is at stake when useful furniture and furnishings are kept in use.

For shoppers, collectors, writers, and small retailers, the through-line is simple: home goods are a meaningful part of household spending, while a great deal of furniture still leaves use through the waste stream. One-of-a-kind pieces have their own histories, conditions, and local markets, which no national average can fully capture.

How to use this page

This page uses public data from the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Figures are reproduced from the latest relevant publication available for each source, rather than blended into a single estimate. Retail and spending data are for 2024; the EPA's most recent product-specific furniture data are for 2018.
